The Life of Fujiwara no Takie and Its Major Events
Fujiwara no Takie was born in the year 979 and passed away in 1044. Let’s trace his life along with the major events.
The Incident of Attacking Emperor Hanayama, “Chōtoku Incident”
Fujiwara no Takie was born as the fourth son of Fujiwara no Michitaka in the year 979. His mother was Takakai Takako. His sister was the Empress Teishi, his uncle was Fujiwara no Michikado, and his father succeeded his grandfather Kaneie as regent and sesshō.
Takie himself progressed well, becoming a Gon Chunagon at the age of 16 in the first year of Chōtoku (995). However, in the same year, Michitaka passed away. Michikado became the Minister of the Right and assumed office as regent, surpassing Michitaka’s eldest son Yoshide, who was considered the successor. As the eldest son of the Nakase Family, Takie was naturally not pleased.
According to Fujiwara no Mitsuyoshi’s diary “Ko Yūki,” in July of the same year, an argument broke out between Takie’s retainers and Michikado’s attendants on Shichijō Dōri, and in August, Takie’s retainers killed one of Michikado’s bodyguards. The following year, in 996, Takie himself instigated the Chōtoku Incident, where he attacked Emperor Hanayama’s group.
The overview of the incident is as follows. Izumi was accompanied by Yamatokimi, the daughter of Fujiwara no Tamimitsu. On the other hand, Emperor Hanayama went to his fourth son. Izumi misunderstood that the Emperor also favored the same woman and consulted Takie. Takie led his retainers to ambush the Emperor, but one of the retainers shot through the sleeve of the Emperor’s robes.
Although the retired emperor, despite being a monk, maintained silence due to the fear and indecency of the visiting women, Michikado found out about it, resulting in Izumi being transferred to Dazaifu and Takie being exiled to Izumo. However, due to illness, Takie remained in Tango Province (present-day northern Hyogo Prefecture).
