Starting from April 1, individuals will be assigned a personal identification number (My Number) to their ordinary bank accounts. Economist Kenta Sato mentions that many people were surprised by the announcement from financial institutions as the system started without sufficient notice from the government. It is advised to understand the system and consider how to manage the linkage with one’s account carefully. Under the revised My Number Act, pension recipients are required to link their public fund receipt account information and My Number with the government. The registration is not compulsory, but failure to respond to the notification from the Japan Pension Service may result in automatic registration. Concerns about government monitoring assets persist as pension recipients’ account information and My Number will be registered with the government on May 27. In addition to overseeing the linkage between ordinary bank accounts and My Numbers, the government is also preparing to issue new banknotes worth 50 trillion yen from July, aimed at cracking down on “drawer deposits”. While the linkage of ordinary bank accounts is not mandated by the Account Management Act, some people may question the government’s actions.
