Continuing from last time. I (Misako) lost my husband 10 years ago and have been working as a full-time employee, working hard with my daughter, Emi. My daughter got married to Jun, her husband, 5 years ago, and they have two grandchildren. However, recently, due to Jun changing jobs, our household finances have become tight, and he asked for temporary cohabitation. I agreed as long as we shared the household chores and followed the rules, but once we started living together, Jun showed no intention of leaving the house at all. No matter how many times I tried to motivate him, his enthusiasm only lasted for about 3 days at most. During lunch break at work, I couldn’t help but confide in my close colleague without holding back.
“Even so, is the daughter to blame for choosing that match? Don’t parents have the responsibility to raise such a son?””But it’s far, isn’t it?” “Well, then there’s nothing we can do.”
Even though Manami said, “If you can’t keep your promise, leave,” she was only protecting Jun. If I let go of my daughter’s family now, my daughter would have to carry the burden alone. Thinking like that, I couldn’t bring myself to kick him out. However…
Unable to come to a conclusion on my own, I consulted with a close colleague. To my surprise, he said something unexpected. It’s true that the decision to marry Jun, to live together in the house, and to refuse Jun to do housework were all her actions. However, it is without a doubt that I raised my daughter in this way. That’s why I think I should take responsibility…
I couldn’t accept those words. I’m not lying when I say I’m worried about Manami, but I don’t know how far I should support her or how much I should worry. Drawing that line is difficult. But those words made me see something valuable within myself.
