Explanation for Today
In baseball, when you swing at a pitch but miss, or in bowling when you knock down all the pins, it’s called a “strike.” The words “strike” and “strike” are similar. In fact, these two words are the same in English, which is “strike.” Although it is pronounced as “strike” in English, why is it called “strike” when referring to labor-related actions? The credit goes to Fukuzawa Yukichi, who introduced Western culture to Japan. In Meiji 12, Fukuzawa Yukichi introduced the concept of “uniting with colleagues to negotiate with employers” as “strike.”
As a result, in Japanese, “strike” came to be used exclusively in the context of labor strikes. The origin of the labor-related meaning of “strike” in English can be traced back to the protest activities of sailors in the 18th century. At that time, sailors collectively lowered the sails to protest against ship owners.
