Continuing from last time. I (Ai) currently live with my husband Takashi. Our son Naoki is a second-year university student living on his own. I don’t particularly like my father-in-law, so I rarely visit my in-laws’ house. I struggle with dealing with my stubborn and rude father-in-law who tries to impose his own ideas. Every time I meet my father-in-law, we end up arguing, and eventually I was told not to cross the threshold of their house, freeing me from my father-in-law’s family. After that, my kind mother-in-law passed away a few days ago. At the post-funeral gathering with relatives…
Takashi was scolded loudly by his father, and Naoki sighed with an expression that said, “Here we go again.” “I think your grandfather is more foolish than you because he is very particular about the name of the university,” his father said, which further infuriated him, but other relatives responded calmly, saying, “There, there.”
“Takashi, now that your mother has passed away, you need to take care of your father,” an uncle advised Takashi, and other relatives who were listening agreed. “If there are any problems, we will help each other out.” His father nodded contently at those words.
Takashi has always found it difficult to express his feelings to his father firmly. The same thing happened with my mother-in-law. Perhaps unconsciously, he was protecting himself by not causing any problems. I hoped that one day Takashi would realize and confront his father. However, when the cohabitation issue suddenly came up this time, Takashi desperately resisted. From my perspective, he might still be a little naive…but considering Takashi’s track record, I think he did his best. Living with my father-in-law is out of the question! I want to punch the presumptuous uncle and other relatives!
