Some may say, “A meal is not complete without white rice!” Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA Zennoh) has cooked it! “Japan’s Best Way to Eat Rice,” written by the JA Zennoh Grain Department, is a book that collects delicious ways to eat rice every day, for all 365 days of the year. It is a book filled with love for rice, including ways to enjoy it.
In recent years, some people have stopped eating rice due to carbohydrate restriction, but in reality, rice is an excellent source of protein and contributes to the activation of the brain and intestines. Japan’s rice self-sufficiency rate is almost 100%. By knowing more about the delicious ways to eat rice, the staple food that Japan has proudly cultivated for over 2,000 years, your life will become even happier. This time, we will introduce “evolved onigiri,” a satisfying variation of our soul food, onigiri.

Your regular onigiri transforms into a satisfying one-hand meal
I love classic onigiri with pickled plum, salmon, nori, and other fillings, but sometimes I feel like something is missing. By combining various ingredients, the satisfaction level increases, and it is also recommended as a hospitality menu.
Ginger pork onigiri, packed full!
By using a milk carton, you can neatly wrap many ingredients!
[Ingredients (for 1 person)]
・Warm rice……300g
・Roasted nori (whole)……1 sheet
・Ginger pork, Sunny lettuce, Mayonnaise…appropriate amount for each
[How to make]
Last night’s dinner leftovers have prepared a voluminous onigiri. Not limited to ginger, any side dish such as teriyaki chicken or Hoi Ko Lo is fine. It is recommended for collecting leftovers from dinner. Wash the milk carton well, cut one side, close the spout with a stapler to create a rectangular mold. Spread out the plastic wrap, place the nori, half of the rice, mayonnaise, Sunny lettuce, roasted ginger, and the remaining rice in that order. Finally, wrap it with glue and transparent film, then cut it with the film. Sprinkle toasted white sesame seeds according to your preference and enjoy.
Corn butter grilled onigiri
Three variations of deliciousness are baked-in rice, grilled onigiri, and green tea pickles!
[Ingredients (quantities for easy preparation)]
・Meter……2 pieces
・Corn kernels……50g
・Katsuobushi……1 pack (2g)
・Soy sauce……2 tablespoons
・Butter……20g
[How to make]
If you make corn-infused rice in the rice cooker, you can enjoy it as is. Next, we made grilled onigiri, and finally, we served dashi and green tea to make green tea pickles. A sinful meal that you can taste three times in one go. Wash the rice, soak it in water, drain it in a colander, and put it in the inner pot. Add soy sauce, pour water up to the 2-cup mark, mix in the bonito flakes, cover with corn, and simmer. When the rice is ready, add butter, mix well, and stir-fry in a frying pan.
