Vocabulary Test Questions
Today, April 23rd, is “Clam Day”.
In the Manyoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves), it was written as “四時美 (Shijibi)”.
Clams are in season in summer and winter, with those harvested during the dog days of summer called “doyou shijimi” and those harvested in winter called “kanshijimi”.
While eel is traditionally eaten on the day of the Ox in summer, clams have long been enjoyed as a nutritious food even before the custom of eating eel began.
There is an idiomatic phrase involving shells, which means “to create a shell,” and it signifies “to cry with the mouth bent into a square shape”.
It is explained in dictionaries that this expression originated from the resemblance of the mouth when crying to the shape of a clam.
Furthermore, there are still many idiomatic phrases involving shells, but today’s question is which of the following shells is used to mean “unrequited love”.

Vocabulary Test Explanation
Explanation for today
Abalone is also used for wrapping gifts.
An elongated abalone is called “熨斗鮑 (noshiawabi)” and the wrapping used for it is called “熨斗 (noshi)”.
On the other hand, clams were used in games like “貝覆 (kaiooi)” and “貝合 (kaiawase)”, where they were lined up in a manner similar to the card game Concentration, searching for pairs of shells.
Because only matching pairs fit perfectly, it became a symbol of harmonious marriage.
Since there is no corresponding shell for abalone, the phrase “unrequited love of abalone” was born from it.
In the Manyoshu, there is a poem that laments one’s unrequited love like this:
– In the bay of Ise, a diver dives morning and evening searching for clams, which are like the unrequited love of abalone.
This expression has been around since ancient times.
