Word Quiz Explanation
Today’s Explanation
“Cappuccino” is made by adding milk to espresso, and the cup for espresso is different from regular coffee, it is a small cup called “demitasse”.
The “demitasse” cup comes from the French words “demi” meaning “half” and “tas” meaning “cup”.
The meaning of “Espresso” is debated, with “fast” or “under pressure” being the main contenders.
Espresso is also derived from the Italian word that means “for you only” or “special” because it is made one cup at a time when ordered, a distinct feature.
Before “Cappuccino” originated in Italy with frothed milk added to espresso, there was a coffee called “Kapuziner” in Vienna that had milk added to it.
Both have the same origin for their names, and the color plays a crucial role.
When coffee and milk are mixed, it turns brown.
That color matches the color of the capuchin friars’ robes, also known as the Capuchin order. The color of their robes is where the name “Cappuccino” is believed to come from.
There is also a theory that it comes from the Italian word for hood “Cappuccio”, indicating the hood worn by Capuchin friars, resembling the frothed milk placed on top of a cappuccino, so in any case, the origin is the friars.
