In April 2023, “Shuiro” opened along Jingu-dori, which leads to Heian Jingu Shrine, and it is the flagship shop of “Uchuu no Yoake,” a brand of eggs produced in Miyama, northern Kyoto. The spacious space offers an all-day dining experience where you can enjoy morning, lunch, cafe, and dinner, as well as a selection of miscellaneous goods and take-out menus featuring eggs as the main ingredient. Why not stop by before or after visiting Heian Jingu Shrine or touring art museums?
Only a 5-minute walk from Tozai Line’s Higashiyama Station. It is located in Jingu-dori, where galleries, shops, and Japanese sweet shops line up, just before the grand torii gate of Heian Jingu Shrine, making it a landmark in the Okazaki area. The vibrant vermilion signboards seen on shrine torii gates and main halls serve as landmarks.
Upon entering the entrance, the left side is a temporary pop-up corner used for artist introductions and rental galleries, the back is a take-out corner, and the right side is the dining area. The window, walls, and shelves that serve as partitions display selected items such as Shigaraki pottery “KIKOF” and Yamanaka lacquerware “Wado Mikio Shoten,” as well as tableware, Japanese candles, towels, and bath salts, all selected with the concept of “enhancing everyday life.”
The menu served in the dining area varies depending on the time of day, with morning options including “Free-range Egg Breakfast” and “Croissant Sandwich Plate with Free-range Egg,” lunch options including “Soft-boiled Scotch Egg” and “Omurice Napolitan,” and dinner options including “Seasonal Steamed Kyoto Vegetables” as well as meat and fish dishes.
The popular breakfast and lunch option is the special collaboration menu “Shuiro Hassun Gozen” with Atsuko Watanabe, a chef from Gion. It includes Kyoto-style obanzai dishes, eight seasonal dishes featuring soybeans and fermented foods, and comes with Miyama rice, eggs, and miso minestrone.
The eggs used, “Uchuu no Yoake,” are produced by free-range chickens raised on a poultry farm in Miyama-cho, Kyoto, blessed with clean water and clear air, and fed with their own blend of feed. The eggs are characterized by their thick and elastic egg whites.
The recommended dessert is a representative egg-based sweet, pudding. The rich flavor and smooth texture, condensed with the essence of eggs, is sure to captivate you.
On sunny days, why not enjoy a picnic on the terrace or at Okazaki Park near Heian Jingu Shrine by taking out some egg-based menu items? Premium soft serve, milkshakes, donuts, and other egg-inspired dishes are available, with a recommended unique burger called the “Dashimaki Cutlet Burger,” with a crispy outer coating and a surprise inside (!) featuring the umami of eggs and a generous amount of homemade tartar sauce. It pairs perfectly with the original organic craft cola.
The BGM playing in the store is selected and supervised by Tomoyuki Tanaka of Fantastic Plastic Machine, who produced the music for the Tokyo Olympics 2022. In one corner of the dining area, you can hear the sounds of nature recorded in Miyama, such as the voices of chickens living on the poultry farm in Miyama, the flow of a river, the chorus of frogs, and the sound of stepping on fallen leaves, creating an atmosphere as if you were in the forest when you close your eyes and listen. The BGM changes depending on the area, so take a stroll around the store.
From morning, lunch, cafe, to dinner, and even souvenir selection, this is a versatile establishment that can be used according to the time of visit and the occasion.
